In the following gallery pages you will find Scimshaw artwork that I've done on naturaly shed antlers that I have personally found. The antlers I use are mostly from Deer and Elk. Every year in late winter and early spring Deer and Elk shed the previous years antlers and prepare to grow a new set. I spend an average of 60 to 90 days hiking the outdoors in search of these antlers. Although it's possible to buy shed antlers for the my artwork I think it's much more personal to find them myself. It may take hiking several miles to find an antler hidden in the forrest or brush and then a few hours to prep the antler for the beginning stages of Scrimshaw. The art of Scrimshaw is basically scratching or making millions of dots of the artwork onto a hard surface and then filling the scratches or dots with ink . This is a very tedious process and can take many hours to complete a piece. Some of my Scrimshaw will have a picture of the antler as I found it. In some cases the picture may not be available.
